Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) has stressed that the Smart Irrigation Project that it is currently implementing in its research stations and with which it is competing for the Global Summit on the Information Society Award 2012 will substantially curb water wastage in farming irrigation, which is at present consuming 70@ of all water requirements. ADFCA is participating in the contest for the award among organizations from many countries. It is done through voting and ADFCA is trying through its participation to bring attention to the fact that the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is adopting the latest agricultural innovations to improve irrigation methods in the farms and subsequently achieve the desired goals. Mohamed Jalal Al Rayssi, Director of Communication and Communication Service at ADFCA, said that ADFCA always remained committed to sustainable practices that conserved natural resources of the country, especially water. "It is in this context that ADFCA is promoting the idea of smart and model farms that consume much less water and conserve it for future generations," he pointed out. Al Rayssi has explained that the smart irrigation system identifies the actual water requirements by sensing the moisture content in the soil and as per the varying needs of different plants in different seasons. "Wireless sensors connected to satellites identify these requirements. The automated integrated irrigation system within a farm will dispense only the actual amount of water needed for irrigation. The system will consist of sensors, rain gauge, an operating system and a meteorological station," he concluded.
