Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA)'s Specialized Inspection Department launched an expansive inspection campaign at outlets selling meat, poultry and fish in Musaffah in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The campaign in Musaffah resulted in three charges of violation in a meat shop and two fish outlets, in addition to five warnings issued against three meat shops and two fish outlets. A total of 37 KG of fish and meat unfit for human consumption was ordered to be destroyed.

Last week, the inspections targeted fish sellers in Bani Yas, during which 11 fish outlets were inspected. The campaign in Bani Yas saw three cases of violation being charged, besides one warning and the destruction of 95 KG fish unfit for human consumption.

Saeed Jasim, Acting Director of Communication and Community Service at ADFCA said the reasons for violation charges and warnings included the lack of clear name cards on the fish on display, storing fish without ice, displaying de-frozen fish to sell it as fresh, keeping fish in unsuitable plastic boxes, workers not wearing gloves and head covers and other malpractices.

"The inspections were carried out without any prior notice to the outlets. The secrecy of the inspections was maintained to such a degree that the inspectors deputed for the job in each area were different from the ones who usually frequent it. Overall, we have noticed that the number of violations and warnings has dwindled substantially over a period, thanks to the concerted efforts of the inspectors to spread food safety awareness among the workers," Saeed Jasim pointed out.

He also explained that ADFCA focused special attention on remote areas outside the city areas so the benefits of food monitoring operations are evenly experienced across all areas of the emirate.
